Phone.com is one of the newest cloud based PBX systems around and it is perfectly functional and priced competitively. However going up head to head with RingCentral is an ominous task, so how will it pan out?


The first thing of concern is that both products are targeting the same business niche – SoHo, SMB and in RingCentral’s case even larger deployments. This is a vast and difficult market to become dominant. RingCentral has already established itself as a market leader, and dominates the SMB marketplace due to its features and pricing. Can Phone.com, a relative newbie on the scene actually rise up and challenge such a heavyweight?


So What are The Citeria to Determine The Best System?

When as a business you consider buying a virtual or hosted telephone system the criteria should be clear and well planned. Many hosted IP/PBX or virtual systems will be available at different price points but can they deliver the functions and features you require?

No other IP/PBX or virtual phone systems come close to matching RingCentral’s feature set. Furthermore, RingCentral has been operational since the late nineties and developed over the years accordingly. Phone.com on the other hand has been only in operation since 2008 but has grown through providing a reliable, feature rich and affordable service.

For example, Phone.com has a very feature rich set of functions for the standard business; it can scale and downscale to support virtual mobile businesses. An example is that Phone.com can be deployed initially as a startup solution but scale rapidly to be a home office or SMB solution.

RingCentral on the other hand can scale from the single entrepreneur to a large company, and this isn’t just down to technology it also is about cost.


Price and Service Plans

As we are beginning to see when we compare VoIP and cloud, based IP/PBX solutions the price plans are beginning to merge. Whereas previously virtual telephone systems had limited inbound service features compared to their bigger siblings in the hosted IP/PBX services market that has begun to change with service providers consolidating all the features into one set and differentiating either on free minutes or on monthly charges per seat. Therefore there are typically no longer the large differentials with regards price and features all the services are beginning to diverge. Subsequently the price differentials although based on alternative criteria are very marginal.

Initially Phone.com boasts a price point of $9.99 a user per month with additional charges for tax etc. Phone also offers a Plus Plan at $19.99 and the ProPlan at $29.99 on the other hand RingCentral’s Professional virtual telephone service is depending on the price plan either Professional – virtual incoming entry level service Pro at $12.99 or Pro Plus at $19.99 or ProPower at $24.99.

RingCentral has the richest set of features of all hosted IP/PBX services; its only failings are with the call/contact center specific features that a business might require. The problem is that RingCentral does provide the functionality to support a small contact center but not the management and administration tools required to operate one successfully. A notable failure is lack of real time agent monitoring and wallboard support.

However, saying that RingCentral has all the features and functions required to operate a SMB or even large business.

With regards Phone.com, we begin to see a move from the free minute’s business model with limited functionality to a full-blown IP/PBX system. Unfortunately, Phone.com insists on basic features such as:

  • Call recording
  • Caller analytics (reporting)
  • Automated transcription of voicemails
  • Premier hold music

As being charged at premium rates.

Some other features missing are video conferencing, Phone.com supports HD voice but not video which is a standard feature with RingCentral.

  1. Toll Free & Local Phone Numbers – You can choose from a list of Toll-Free Numbers or Local Numbers. A toll free number allows customers to call you free. Choices include 800, 888, 877, 866, 855 or vanity numbers. Local Numbers allow you to establish a local presence. There are over 200 area codes available. However, RingCentral does not support International numbers.
    2. Phone Service Administration
    – The call administration portal allows you to manage the entire system from your computer and set caller ID options.
    3. Visual Voice Mail – This feature allows you to view the call log, fax log, return calls, delete messages, and perform other tasks from a user-friendly screen.
    4. Auto Answer Greeting – Enables a professional auto receptionist to always answer calls, never miss a call and forward to the correct extension. Call answering and forwarding via IVR can enhance your company’s personal brand by enabling you to greet your customers in a professional manner.

In contrast Phone.com:

  1. Available Phone numbers – You can choose from Toll-Free Numbers, Local or even International numbers. You also have the option to transfer an existing phone number to your virtual account. Toll free choices include 800, 888, 877, 866, 855 and vanity numbers. A big benefit for businesses with international reach is to have numbers in foreign countries.
  2. Mobile Phone Application – The desktop and mobile application allows you to set caller ID options view the call log and send internet faxes.
  3. Voice Mail – Voice mail can be transcribed, at an addition cost, so you can have them sent to email rather than have to log-in and read the messages.
  4. Auto receptionist greeting – The greeting message is customizable, and recordable through professional services, so callers will know right away that they have reached the company they intended to call.


Bottom Line

However, RingCentral has been around the longest and that shows with its more balanced business model. Phone.com though technically excellent and at least on a par with RingCentral in many respects has to address the additional charges for some quite basic features.
